 ‘Walk In The Park’
Jerry’s 10 song album is a mix of originals (Walk in the Park, Lazy Days…), rearranged standards (Smile, Summertime…), and a couple of favourite ballads (Soul Eyes, Georgia on My Mind). Overall , the aim is to help relax, reflect and recharge. You know, like a ‘Walk In The Park’.

This is Jerry’s first album as a leader. It is heavily influenced by early 1960’s Jazz recordings, in particular the album ‘Blue Hour’ by Stanley Turrentine & The Three Sounds, which inspired the style and approach of this album. In Jerry’s words, “I wanted that lyrical and soulful vibe, with a bluesy edge”.

Jerry’s long time friend and excellent guitarist, Dave Sikula, is the producer. Dave did a fantastic job of capturing that early 60’s sound. On top of producing & mixing the album, helping write and arrange the songs, Dave also plays some great guitar on 3 tracks. (Dave is the ‘plus’ in the Jerry Cook Quartet +).

The band was put together with help from another long time friend and musical collaborator, Cory Weeds. Cory, a great sax player, was playing at Frankie’s Jazz Club and invited Jerry down to listen. Cory thought this rhythm section would be perfect for what Jerry wanted to do. He was right;  Jesse Cahill on drums, Chris Gestrin on piano & John Lee on bass are exactly the right fit for this style, and did an amazing job of interpreting the music on Jerry's album. They are all seasoned pros, they lead their own groups, and they are in demand session and touring musicians. Their subtlety and swing complement Jerry’s approach perfectly.

When you think of jazz in Vancouver, Cory Weeds’ name comes up more than most. He and Jerry have a long history of musical collaboration; from the early 1990’s at Capilano College (now University), to playing casual gigs together, to forming ‘Crash’ ,a 6-piece jazz/funk band which recorded 3 albums and toured the country (1997-2003). Cory offered to put this album on his record label, Cellar Music and also helped Jerry secure some additional funding from FACTOR.
The band had a couple of gigs to work on the material before recording, one at Frankie’s Jazz Club and another at Hood 29. They made it sound like they’d been playing together for years.

Jerry dedicates this album to his parents, who live in Sidney B.C. They always had great music in the house; From Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald,  Dave Brubeck, to The Beatles and Beethoven. That was a huge inspiration for Jerry and his siblings.
